Lawyer and Professional in Government and Public Affairs from Universidad de Los Andes, with experience in Public International Law, International Economic Law, and WTO Law.
María José Guerrero was awarded the Ciro Angarita Scholarship, granted by Universidad de Los Andes in 2022 and 2023. She began her legal practice at the Program for Action on Equality and Social Inclusion (PAIIS) at Universidad de Los Andes, where she worked for a year on projects related to peacebuilding and the promotion of the rights of individuals with diverse identities. In this role, she drafted amicus curiae submissions for the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Constitutional Court of Colombia.
Subsequently, in 2022, she was part of the team representing Universidad de Los Andes in the John Jackson Moot Court Competition on International Economic Law, a simulated trial focused on the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Her team won the American Regional Rounds, competing against universities such as Georgetown and the University of Ottawa. Later, they competed in the Global Rounds held in Geneva, Switzerland, in June 2022.
María José served as a Research Assistant for the WTO Chair Program in partnership with Universidad de Los Andes, where she authored a chapter in the publication “International Law and New Technologies: Key Debates and Their Regulation in Colombia” and worked on other WTO-related projects between 2022 and early 2023.
In August 2023, María José acted as a support coach for the team representing Universidad de Los Andes in the John Jackson Moot Court Competition. The team reached the semifinals in the Regional Rounds held in Bogotá, Colombia, and later participated in the Global Rounds held in Geneva, Switzerland, in June 2024.
Currently, María José is the Head Coach of the competition and teaches the WTO Law course during the second semester of each year, from which the team representing the University in the 2025 Regional Rounds is selected.
Additionally, she is an Assistant Professor for the International Economic Law course at Universidad de Los Andes, where she teaches topics related to WTO law, investment law and international arbitration.
