María José Guerrero is a lawyer and professional in Government and Public Affairs from Universidad de Los Andes. She has experience in Public International Law, International Economic Law, and WTO Law.
María José was awarded the Ciro Angarita Scholarship, granted by Universidad de Los Andes during 2022 and 2023. She began her legal training at the Program for Action on Equality and Social Inclusion (PAIIS) of Universidad de Los Andes, where she worked for one year on peacebuilding initiatives and the promotion of the rights of individuals with diverse identities. As part of this work, she contributed amicus curiae briefs before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Constitutional Court of Colombia.
In 2022, she was part of the team that represented Universidad de Los Andes at the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition on International Economic Law, which simulates proceedings based on the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Her team won the regional American rounds, competing against universities such as Georgetown University and the University of Ottawa. They later advanced to the global rounds held in Geneva, Switzerland, in June 2022.
María José subsequently served as a Research Assistant for the WTO Chair at Universidad de Los Andes, where she authored a chapter in the publication “International Law and New Technologies: Key Debates and Their Regulation in Colombia” and contributed to various WTO-related projects between late 2022 and early 2023.
In August 2023, María José was an assistant coach for the team preparing to represent Universidad de Los Andes in the 2023–2024 edition of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition. The team reached the semifinals of the regional rounds held in Bogotá, Colombia, and later competed in the world rounds in Geneva in June 2024.
Currently, María José serves as the lead coach of the competition and teaches the WTO Law course during the second academic semester, from which the team representing Universidad de Los Andes is selected. Under her leadership, the 2025 team was the only team from Latin America to advance in the global rounds held in Geneva.
She also serves as a Teaching Assistant for the International Economic Law course at Universidad de Los Andes, where she leads sessions on investment law, WTO law, and international arbitration.
